Grafts, follicles and hair counts
Frequently asked questions
49 answersGrafts & FolliclesWhat is the difference between a graft and a follicle in a FUE hair transplant?
A hair follicle is the structure that produces a hair. A follicular unit is a natural group of follicles. A graft is the tissue unit moved during FUE, usually containing a follicular unit, so one graft is not necessarily one follicle or one hair.
Ask whether your quote counts grafts, follicles or individual hairs. A mix of single-hair and multi-hair grafts affects the total hair count and how coverage is planned. Compare quotes using the same unit, and ask how grafts will be distributed across your hairline, mid-scalp and crown.
Grafts & FolliclesHow many grafts do I need for a FUE hair transplant?
Your graft estimate depends on the size of the area, existing hair, donor supply and the coverage you want to achieve. Photos support preliminary planning; the in-person examination confirms what is appropriate.
Bring your priorities to the evaluation: hairline, crown, overall coverage or a combination. The team can explain how available grafts would be distributed. Ask for the estimated graft range in writing rather than comparing a graft count with a hair count.
Grafts & FolliclesWhy do multiple hairs appear to grow from one hair follicle?
What looks like several hairs from one follicle is often a natural follicular unit: a group of separate follicles growing close together. In hair-transplant discussions, “multiple hairs from one follicle” usually refers to this grouping.
This distinction explains why a single FUE graft may contain several hairs. Your donor area has its own mix of single-hair and multi-hair units. That mix helps the medical team plan both a soft hairline and coverage farther behind it. A painful or inflamed scalp change should be assessed separately.
Grafts & FolliclesWhat is a multi-hair graft in a FUE hair transplant?
A multi-hair graft is a transplanted tissue unit containing more than one hair-producing follicle. It may carry two, three or four hairs rather than a single hair.
The team considers hair count alongside graft quality, hair thickness and placement. Multi-hair grafts can support coverage in suitable areas, while single-hair grafts serve a different purpose at the hairline. Ask how your graft mix fits the proposed design.
Grafts & FolliclesHow many hairs are in 2,000 grafts for a FUE hair transplant?
There is no fixed conversion. The total depends on how many single-hair and multi-hair grafts are included. For example, 2,000 grafts averaging two hairs per graft would contain 4,000 hairs; that is an illustration, not a prediction for every patient.
Ask your team to distinguish the graft estimate from the estimated hair count. Your donor area determines the available mix. Hair thickness, placement and the size of the area also affect visual coverage, so two patients receiving the same graft count may look different.
Grafts & FolliclesWhy do hair transplant clinics count grafts instead of individual hairs?
Grafts are the tissue units extracted and implanted during a hair transplant. Because a graft can contain more than one hair, graft count and hair count measure different things.
Ask the clinic to state the unit used in its package or quote. A number described as hairs should not be compared directly with the same number of grafts. Your written plan should also explain coverage goals and the limits of your donor supply.
Grafts & FolliclesAre multi-hair grafts better than single-hair grafts in a FUE hair transplant?
Neither is best for every location. Single-hair grafts help create a softer front edge, while multi-hair grafts can help build coverage behind the hairline and in other suitable areas.
A natural-looking result depends on selecting and placing grafts deliberately. Ask how the team plans the transition from the frontal edge to denser areas. The aim is an appropriate distribution, not simply choosing the grafts with the highest hair count.
Grafts & FolliclesCan one FUE hair transplant graft contain four hairs?
Yes. Some natural follicular units contain four hairs and may be transplanted as one graft. Other grafts contain one, two or three hairs, so a four-hair graft is not something every graft or patient will have.
Your donor area supplies the available graft mix. The clinical team decides where different grafts should be placed in your restoration plan. Do not assume an advertised graft count can be multiplied by four to obtain your expected hair count.
Grafts & FolliclesDoes a higher hair count per graft guarantee better FUE hair transplant results?
No. Hair count per graft is only one factor. Placement, hairline design, hair thickness, donor management and graft survival also matter.
Ask how your proposed graft count relates to the area being treated. A count alone cannot describe the naturalness or density you can expect. Review examples relevant to your own hair characteristics and discuss realistic coverage before reserving.
Grafts & FolliclesCan extracting too many grafts during a FUE hair transplant damage the donor area?
Yes. Excessive extraction can leave the donor area visibly thin or patchy and reduce the supply available for future procedures. More grafts are not automatically a better plan.
Your donor assessment should determine a safe extraction plan. Mention any previous transplant and ask how the team accounts for future hair loss. Package size and promotional eligibility do not override the medical limits of your donor supply.
Grafts & FolliclesShould I choose the FUE hair transplant clinic offering the most grafts?
Do not choose on graft count alone. Consider medical planning, donor preservation, who performs the procedure, realistic coverage and follow-up.
Ask each clinic to explain its estimate and specify whether it is counting grafts or hairs. Compare the proposed treatment areas and package inclusions. A suitable plan should be based on your own donor hair and goals rather than a promised maximum number.
Candidacy & EvaluationsAm I a candidate for a FUE hair transplant?
FUE candidacy depends on your hair-loss diagnosis, donor hair, scalp health, medical history and realistic coverage goals. A remote review provides preliminary guidance; the in-person evaluation confirms whether the procedure is appropriate.
Tell the team about previous hair procedures, medications and recent changes in hair loss. Photos can support an initial opinion, but donor density and scalp condition need an in-person assessment. If FUE is unsuitable, ask which evaluation or treatment should come first.
Candidacy & EvaluationsWhat does an in-person hair evaluation with trichoscopy include?
The full in-person evaluation combines your history and scalp examination with a magnified view of your hair and scalp using a trichoscope. The findings help the clinician assess your hair-loss pattern and refine your treatment plan.
Bring previous test results and a list of products or medication you use. Ask the clinician to explain the findings, which areas need attention and how they affect the proposed plan. Any laboratory testing is a separate decision based on your history and examination.
Candidacy & EvaluationsWhen is a hormonal blood panel needed for a hair loss assessment?
A clinician may request blood tests when your symptoms, history or hair-loss pattern suggest a possible underlying contributor. A hormonal blood panel is not automatically necessary for everyone with hair loss.
Describe any additional symptoms and share previous laboratory results. The clinician determines which tests, if any, are relevant. A hormonal assessment is diagnostic testing; it is separate from a hormonal health treatment or product.
Candidacy & EvaluationsHow do I know which hair restoration treatment I need?
Start with your hair-loss pattern and goals. Our Find My Treatment guide helps you explore options, and the free pretravel evaluation lets the team review your photographs and history before recommending a next step.
Use Find My Treatment to explore the available paths. If you already know the area you want to restore, you can go directly to the free evaluation. The medical review may suggest a transplant, non-surgical care or further assessment.
Candidacy & EvaluationsHow does the free online FUE hair transplant evaluation work?
The free online evaluation is a pretravel review of your photos, history and restoration goals. It helps you understand preliminary candidacy, suitable options and estimated pricing before arranging a visit.
Submit clear photos and the requested health information. The team reviews whether FUE or another option may fit and sends preliminary recommendations and estimated pricing by email. The full in-person examination confirms candidacy and can change the proposed plan.
Candidacy & EvaluationsHow do I send photos for a free FUE hair transplant evaluation?
Use our free evaluation form to share well-lit photographs of the treatment area and donor hair. Several angles help the team review coverage needs and ask any follow-up questions.
Photograph your hair in clear, even lighting without filters or concealment products. Include front, top, crown, both sides and the back of the scalp. For beard or eyebrow restoration, include close views of that area as well. Use the evaluation form to submit the requested information.
Costs & PackagesHow much does a FUE hair transplant cost in Tijuana?
Standard scalp FUE packages at TJ Hair System start at $3,950 USD. The published P1, P2 and P3 prices are $3,950, $4,450 and $4,950 USD. Your evaluation determines the appropriate package and final quote.
Compare your written quote with the current pricing page and any active promotion. Confirm the treatment area, package, included services and additional costs before reserving. Promotional availability and eligibility are confirmed separately.
Costs & PackagesWhy does the price of a FUE hair transplant vary?
FUE pricing varies with the treatment area, proposed graft range, shaving approach, package inclusions and any additional therapies. Your donor assessment also affects what can realistically be offered.
Request a quote that names the package and explains what it covers. A scalp, beard, eyebrow or no-shave plan can involve different work. Compare complete plans and follow-up, not just the lowest advertised number.
Costs & PackagesWhat is included in a TJ Hair System™ FUE hair transplant package?
Your written quote defines the exact inclusions. TJ Hair System packages may combine the FUE procedure with coordinated travel, recovery support and follow-up; inclusions depend on the selected package and medical plan.
Your written plan should identify the procedure, proposed graft range, laboratory work, medication, recovery arrangements, transport and follow-up included for you. Ask which supportive therapies are included and which are optional. Confirm any companion or extra-night charges before travel.
Costs & PackagesDoes TJ Hair System™ offer FUE hair transplant promotional packages?
Seasonal FUE packages appear in our Promotions category when an offer is available. Promotions have specific terms and limited availability, and do not change the need for an individual medical evaluation.
Check the Promotions page for the current offer, eligibility and availability. Ask your coordinator for a written quote showing the package and any included additional therapies. A promotional package still requires medical suitability for each component.
FUE Hair TransplantsWhat is a FUE hair transplant?
FUE is a hair transplant technique where individual follicular units are extracted from the donor area and implanted into thinning or bald areas.
Your consultation considers the areas you want to restore and the donor hair available. The plan should explain the proposed coverage, graft estimate and follow-up. TJ Hair System performs FUE for scalp, beard and eyebrow restoration; we no longer offer FUT.
FUE Hair TransplantsIs a FUE hair transplant permanent?
Transplanted follicles are usually taken from donor areas that are more resistant to thinning, so they tend to be long lasting. Your surrounding native hair can still change over time, so a long-term plan matters. Durability and results vary between patients.
Discuss how your hairline and coverage may look if untreated hair continues to thin. Your doctor can explain maintenance options and how the proposed design accounts for future changes. No specific density or lifelong cosmetic appearance can be guaranteed.
FUE Hair TransplantsWhat is the donor area for a FUE hair transplant?
The donor area is the region of the scalp, usually the back and sides, where healthy follicles are taken to be transplanted into thinning areas. The quality and density of your donor area help determine what is possible and are assessed during a medical evaluation.
Send clear photos of the back and sides as well as the areas you want restored. During your visit, the team examines the donor area directly before confirming how much hair can be moved. A larger advertised package does not override the safe limits of your donor supply.
FUE Hair TransplantsWhat happens if I keep losing hair after a FUE hair transplant?
Transplanted follicles are typically taken from areas that are more resistant to thinning, so they tend to be durable. Your existing native hair can continue to change over time. A long-term plan, which may include supportive treatments such as PRP, is discussed during your evaluation so future loss is considered.
Tell the team about recent changes and any treatment you already use. Follow-up is an opportunity to review both transplanted and native hair. Your doctor may discuss a separate maintenance plan; additional treatments should have a clear purpose and their own suitability assessment.
FUE Hair TransplantsDoes TJ Hair System™ offer FUE or FUT hair transplants?
TJ Hair System exclusively performs FUE hair transplants. We no longer offer FUT or strip surgery. Our evaluation focuses on whether FUE is suitable for your goals and donor hair.
FUE removes individual follicular units rather than harvesting a strip of scalp. If you previously had FUT elsewhere, mention it and send donor-area photos so the team can assess whether a future FUE procedure is appropriate.
FUE Hair TransplantsDoes a FUE hair transplant hurt?
FUE is performed under local anesthesia, so most patients feel little to no pain during the procedure itself. Mild soreness or tightness afterward is common for a few days and usually manageable with guidance from your medical team. Comfort varies by patient.
Tell your doctor about previous reactions to anesthetics, medications and concerns about comfort. Ask what to expect during administration of the anesthetic, the procedure and the first days afterward. Follow your individual pain-control instructions.
FUE Hair TransplantsDo I need to shave my head for a FUE hair transplant?
Not always. Standard FUE generally involves trimming the donor area, while selected patients may qualify for a no-shave or limited-shave approach. TJ Hair System offers no-shave FUE for men and women when donor hair and coverage needs allow it.
Tell us if keeping your hairstyle is a priority and send photos with your hair at its usual length. Ask which areas would be trimmed, how visible this would be and whether your coverage goals fit a no-shave approach. Do not shave before your visit unless instructed.
FUE Hair TransplantsIs no-shave FUE hair transplantation available for men and women?
Yes. TJ Hair System offers no-shave FUE options for both men and women when suitable. The amount of trimming and achievable coverage depend on your donor hair, hairstyle and the proposed procedure.
Explain your usual hairstyle and your preferred level of discretion. The team will confirm whether limited shaving fits your restoration goals and how any trimmed donor area might be concealed. Obtain the technique and pricing in your written plan.
Beard, Eyebrows & WomenCan a FUE beard transplant fill patchy beard gaps?
A FUE beard transplant may fill sparse areas by moving suitable donor follicles into the beard or mustache. Candidacy depends on donor supply, the cause of the gaps and a realistic facial-hair design.
Send photos of your beard from the front and both sides, along with your donor area. Explain whether your priority is filling isolated patches or creating broader coverage. The team will discuss the proposed shape and maintenance expectations.
Beard, Eyebrows & WomenCan a FUE eyebrow transplant restore thin or patchy eyebrows?
FUE eyebrow restoration may improve sparse brows in suitable candidates by placing donor hairs into a planned brow shape. Transplanted scalp hairs may need regular trimming. Candidacy and achievable fullness require evaluation.
Share photographs and explain whether you want to fill a small gap or restore the full brow. Discuss the desired shape, hair direction and future grooming before booking. The team will review the cause of the thinning and donor suitability.
Beard, Eyebrows & WomenCan women get a FUE hair transplant?
Yes, selected women are candidates for FUE hair transplantation. The cause and pattern of hair loss and the quality of the donor hair must be assessed before a transplant plan is recommended.
Describe how long the thinning has been present, where it occurs and any recent health changes. Share donor-area photographs as well as the area of concern. Ask about hairstyle preservation and whether a limited-shave approach fits your proposed plan.
Non-Surgical TreatmentsCan PRP hair therapy replace a FUE hair transplant?
Usually not. PRP may be considered for selected patients with thinning hair, while FUE moves follicles into an area needing restoration. Whether either is appropriate depends on the cause and extent of your hair loss.
Ask the doctor which problem PRP is intended to address in your case and how progress would be measured. The plan should explain the proposed number of sessions and whether maintenance is expected. PRP should not be presented as a guarantee of transplant-level coverage.
Non-Surgical TreatmentsWhat is Red-Light Therapy used for in a hair restoration plan?
Red-Light Therapy is a non-surgical option that may be considered for selected hair-thinning concerns. It does not move donor follicles like FUE. Your clinician should explain the expected role and limitations of the specific device.
Ask which device is proposed, why it is suitable for you, the treatment schedule and how progress will be assessed. Device protocols differ, so follow the instructions supplied by your clinical team rather than using a generic online schedule.
Non-Surgical TreatmentsCan exosome hair therapy replace a FUE hair transplant?
Exosome hair therapy should not be presented as a proven replacement for FUE. It is an investigational approach with uncertain outcomes. FUE physically relocates donor follicles; an exosome treatment does not perform that function.
If you are considering this option, ask about the exact product, route, evidence, risks and applicable local authorization. Discuss established alternatives and whether the proposed treatment adds a meaningful benefit for your situation.
Non-Surgical TreatmentsCan stem cell hair treatment replace a FUE hair transplant?
Stem cell hair treatments should not be promised to replace a FUE transplant or create guaranteed new coverage. Their role in hair restoration is investigational and requires a discussion of evidence, alternatives and risks.
Ask what is being administered, what evidence supports that specific product and which outcomes can reasonably be measured. Your plan should distinguish the intended supportive role from the coverage expected through transplantation.
Recovery & ResultsWhat is shock loss after a FUE hair transplant?
Shock loss describes shedding that can affect existing hair around a treated area after surgery. Shedding of transplanted hair shafts can also occur as growth cycles reset. Your team should assess unusual, persistent or symptomatic hair loss.
Send follow-up photos and describe when the shedding started, where it is occurring and whether you have other symptoms. Your team can distinguish expected changes from something that needs examination. Do not assume every patch of loss is routine.
Recovery & ResultsHow long does recovery take after a FUE hair transplant?
Early recovery and new hair growth are different stages. The scalp needs careful protection during the initial healing period, while visible growth develops over months. Your medical team gives you a personal schedule for washing, work, exercise and follow-up.
Your aftercare plan should separate early wound care, work, exercise and travel from the longer growth timeline. Follow the instructions for your own procedure and ask before restarting an activity that could affect the treated area.
Recovery & ResultsWhat should I avoid after a FUE hair transplant?
Avoid rubbing, scratching or putting pressure on the grafts, and follow your team’s restrictions on exercise, sun exposure, smoking and alcohol. The timing varies by activity and recovery; do not treat a single deadline as clearance for everything.
Review your work, exercise routine, sun exposure and usual headwear with the team before treatment. Ask for written instructions, including when restrictions can change. Do not stop prescribed medication or restart scalp products without medical guidance.
Recovery & ResultsWhen can I return to work after a FUE hair transplant?
Return-to-work timing depends on your recovery and job. Desk work and physically demanding work have different requirements. Some patients need one to two weeks away; your medical team should confirm the appropriate timing for you.
Explain whether your work involves helmets, heat, dust, bending or lifting. Also consider how comfortable you will feel with temporary visible healing. Ask the team for a return-to-work recommendation that matches your actual duties.
Recovery & ResultsCan I wear a hat after a FUE hair transplant?
Only wear a hat when your medical team says it is safe and the hat will not rub or press on the grafts. The correct timing and fit depend on your procedure and healing.
Bring or describe the hat you plan to wear and explain if your job requires head protection. Ask the team how to put it on and remove it without contacting the treated area. Do not use a tight cap to conceal early healing.
Recovery & ResultsHow long until I see FUE hair transplant results?
Transplanted hair usually sheds in the first weeks, which is expected. New growth then develops gradually, and many patients see meaningful results around 6 to 12 months, with continued refinement after that. Timelines and results vary by patient.
Use consistent photos at the follow-up intervals requested by your team. Early shedding or an uneven start does not show the final appearance. Compare your progress with your individual treatment plan rather than another patient’s photographs.
Travel & Your VisitHow far is TJ Hair System™ in Tijuana from San Diego?
TJ Hair System is in Tijuana, across the border from San Diego. Actual travel time depends on your starting point, traffic and border queues, so a short driving estimate should not be treated as a guaranteed airport-to-clinic transfer time.
Share your arrival airport, flight time and pickup needs before booking. Your coordinator can confirm the meeting point and planned transfer. Allow extra time for the border, particularly on your return journey.
Travel & Your VisitCan international patients travel to TJ Hair System™ for a FUE hair transplant?
Yes. TJ Hair System welcomes international patients, and many travel through San Diego. A remote review helps establish a preliminary plan before travel; an in-person evaluation confirms suitability.
Start your evaluation before purchasing flights. Confirm candidacy, your appointment, the required stay and any transport included in your plan. Tell the coordinator your country of departure and return itinerary so the visit can be organized around your travel.
Travel & Your VisitWhen can I travel home after a FUE hair transplant?
Your medical team confirms when you can travel home after FUE based on the procedure, your recovery and the planned follow-up. Arrange the return date around that guidance rather than assuming every patient can leave the next day.
Ask your coordinator to align your return journey with your clinical instructions and any planned follow-up before departure. Tell the team if the trip involves a long flight, lifting luggage or a long drive. Avoid non-changeable travel until your schedule is confirmed.
Travel & Your VisitCan I cross the US-Mexico border after a FUE hair transplant?
You can plan a return across the border after your medical team clears you for travel. Keep the treated area protected and carry the documents required for your nationality and immigration status. A procedure appointment does not guarantee border entry.
Confirm your return transport and allow for queues. Keep your aftercare supplies accessible and follow the team’s instructions for protecting your scalp. Ask your coordinator about the itinerary; border entry requirements remain your responsibility.
Safety & Our TeamIs a FUE hair transplant in Tijuana safe?
Safety depends on the medical team, facility, candidacy assessment and aftercare, rather than the city alone. FUE is surgery and has risks, including infection, bleeding, scarring and an unsatisfactory result. TJ Hair System requires medical evaluation before treatment.
Ask who performs each part of the procedure, how your history is reviewed and who to contact after returning home. Your consultation should cover the risks specific to you and how problems would be managed.
Safety & Our TeamHow do I choose a FUE hair transplant clinic in Mexico?
Compare the treating medical team, facility, assessment process, patient experience and follow-up. Ask for clear package inclusions and a realistic explanation of what FUE can achieve for your hair.
Request the treating doctor’s name, a clear written quote, examples relevant to your hair type and an explanation of follow-up. Ask how the clinic handles a change in candidacy at the in-person examination. A high graft count or low price alone cannot establish whether a clinic is right for you.
Safety & Our TeamWho performs FUE hair transplants at TJ Hair System™?
TJ Hair System presents its FUE care as doctor-performed with support from a medical team. Your coordinator can confirm the assigned physician and the responsibilities of each team member for your appointment.
Review our medical team page and ask who will be responsible for your procedure. Before booking, confirm who handles evaluation, extraction, recipient-site planning, implantation and follow-up. Your consent discussion should identify the professionals involved.
